Shadows Gather Darkly
Duchy of Lavasse
Officially the Grand Duchy of Lavasse, it is bounded by Chaubrette and Algandy.
Lavasse has prospered and grown from a successful cloth industry, helping a distinct Lavassian culture to emerge. The paintings, literature, and architecture of the region have helped elevate it to a leading position in Erebian civilisation. Politically, however, the strategic location and small size of Lavasse has meant that control of the region has changed hands many times in its history.
Keltoi inhabited Lavasse in the 4^th^ century PD and the region was conquered by Kurlish tribes in the next several hundred years, finally becoming a part of the empire established by Elena Nidala in the 6th century AS. In the dissolution of this empire, the region of Lavasse became a province of the Algandarve crown. In 862 Conrad I, son-in-law of the Algandarve king Charles the Bald, was created the first count of Lavasse. Under Conrad I and Conrad II, Lavasse was made secure against the incursions of the Mercanians. In the last part of the 9^th^ century, Conrad III laid the basis for the industrial and commercial greatness of the region by establishing the wool and silk industries at Lavasse city and instituting an annual fair at Esch-su-Alzette.
By the middle of the 10^th^ century, Lavasse had acquired power equivalent to that of a kingdom and its ruler Conrad V wielded considerable influence in the political affairs of the western mainland. In 968, Conrad V announced Lavasse’s independence of any other nation. Conrad V proceeded to quickly build close economic, cultural and military ties with Chaubrette and Lalkovnia to buffer itself from Algandarve retaliation.
